It is therefore crucial to define expectations for the new software in advance and to ask the software provider the right questions.

Important questions to ask the software provider:

Is the software compatible with my existing tech stack and how easy is the integration?
What security features does the software have: access rights, multi-factor authentication, data encryption, backup and recovery functions, and compliance management?
Does the software receive regular security updates? When did the provider last update the software?
We also asked the 63% of software buyers who regretted a purchase what changes they would make to their software selection process to avoid making mistakes in future purchases. 37% would conduct a security review and consider reviews and other users' opinions. 36% would ensure that the departments and people involved agree on the evaluation/selection criteria beforehand.
