Zenith Launches Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar Lapis Lazuli
An Iconic Design Updated.
Continuing with its 160th anniversary blue theme, Zenith has updated its compact vintage chronograph with a natural gemstone dial. The Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar Lapis Lazuli is a blend of classic and modern with a luxurious dial.
The watch is powered by the latest generation El Primero movement but features a 1970s design – updated with a lapis lazuli dial, the same semi-precious stone found on the GFJ cal. 135 Revival.
I like the basic design of the Chronomaster Original because it is essentially a remake of the 1969 El Primero, a vintage design that still works well today. Zenith has made too many replicas that are identical to the vintage originals, but luckily this lapis lazuli version stands out.
The gemstone dial makes it stand out visually while also giving it a more refined feel than a typical Zenith watch. Although simple, the lapis lazuli dial feels like a substantial upgrade on an already attractive design.

Resurrection of a prototype
While the Chronomaster Original Triple Calendar may look like a vintage remake, it is not. The standard model introduced last year is based on a 1970s prototype that never made it into production. As such, it uses the case and dial layout of the 1969 El Primero, but is not an exact replica of the actual model.
The Lapis Lazuli version is essentially the same as the standard model, save for the lapis lazuli dial and a slightly thicker case to accommodate the significantly thicker dial. The case is also 38mm in diameter and 14mm thick, about 1.5mm thicker than the standard model.
As the lapis lazuli flakes are naturally brittle, the dial disc is thick enough to avoid cracking. This thickness is clearly visible in the chronograph counters and date window, which reflect the height of the lapis lazuli disc.
Mechanically, the Lapis Lazuli model is identical to the Sapphire model, with the El Primero 3610 movement visible through the open caseback. Like the original El Primero movement from 1969, this one is a high-frequency 5 Hz movement, but its construction is more modern.
In addition to a longer 60-hour power reserve, it also features a lightning-seconds function – the central seconds hand rotates once every 10 seconds, allowing the wearer, at least in theory, to record elapsed times of up to 1/10 of a second.
