AIG , one of the largest insurance companies in the United States of America , recently revealed the largest losses caused by cyberattacks made against companies in 2017. Cyber-extortion, piracy of confidential data , security breaches and unauthorized access are among the main causes of losses reported by companies.
According to the report, last year there were as many accidents as those greece email list recorded in the last 4 years combined. This is equivalent to 1 accident per day.
Therefore, an increase in the number of security breaches and data piracy is expected with the recent entry into force of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) .
According to the study, 26% of reported claims were related to cyber-extortion and 12% were related to piracy of confidential data.
The list of most reported incidents also includes security breaches and unauthorized access (11%), identity falsification (9%) and access to data due to negligence or employee error (7%).
The study reveals that no sector has been immune to a cyber attack. In fact, if you have an online page, whether it is about football , books or you work with a landing page like this one about Casino Portugal , then you should know that you are not immune to these problems.

In 2017, claims were recorded in 8 sectors that were not even included in AIG's previous statistics, which demonstrates the increasing diversity of criminal resources.
Financial and professional services emerge as the sectors most affected by cyber attacks (18%), followed by retail (12%) and manufacturing (10%).
Cyberattacks in the GDPR era
The biggest concern for businesspeople and global authorities in 2018 is cyber attacks, according to a Global Risks Survey presented by the World Economic Forum (WEF) .
“With the escalation of cyber threats, the estimated cost of these crimes over the next five years is eight trillion dollars,” said Eugenio Paschoal, president and CEO of Marsh Brazil .
“Last year we saw a series of sophisticated and systemic cyberattacks, such as WannaCry and NotPetya . While ransom payments reached around $150,000, the total economic losses associated with WannaCry are estimated at $8 billion,” said Mark Camillo , AIG EMEA’s Cyber Director .
He also points out that “the new General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) could become a new negotiation tool for extortion, since, under the new law, the consequences for companies that suffer security breaches are higher. Companies will be more willing to report these security breaches, leading to an increase in the volume of cyber claims”.
To respond to one of the biggest and most worrying threats to companies today and combat vulnerability to cyber risks, there are many solutions on the market that aim to protect companies' businesses from leaks of confidential data, computer piracy, computer viruses, sabotage or employee error, information and identity theft.
We recommend that you visit the websites of large antivirus software companies, such as Norton by Symantec , Avast , Kaspersky or UOL Digital Security , which can in fact be a very important first barrier.
In Portugal , the North American insurance company AIG already has an interesting portfolio of clients in various sectors, covered against cyber risks through the protection provided by CyberEdge .
Despite the ever-increasing demand for this type of product, many companies are still unaware of the serious and costly consequences of a cyber attack.
But the important thing is that the protection provided by your antivirus software adds a valuable additional layer to the first line of defense against cyber threats – your company's own computer system.
Businesses then have the flexibility to customize coverage options to ensure they can respond promptly and prevent future or more costly damage.
