Back to Basics: Why Keyword Research Is Still Essential to Any SEO Strategy

There are many areas in SEO that are worth looking into more deeply, such as voice search, RankBrain, and user experience searches.

However, keyword research is still a cornerstone for SEO Experts and consultants. From my perspective, many companies still struggle to work on it properly.

In my opinion, to get to the bottom of SEO , you need to create a long-term SEO strategy.

My framework is to do the basics first.

Essentially, it's the same as building a house.

Let’s start with the basics, the technical part. Since you’re reading the AccuRanker blog spain mobile phone numbers database I assume you’re interested in the technical side of SEO, so let’s summarize some of the most important metrics we work with.

Also, I assume you are familiar with Search Console. I think it is a good idea to start with this basic tool. You can always upgrade with other tools like Screaming Frog to get a deeper understanding of the technical side. However, I believe each area deserves its own blog post, so I will leave it here for now.

Now let’s move on to the next part of my framework: the inside of the house. This part ties in heavily with inbound marketing or content marketing, depending on which term you use.

This is the “place” where you create your content marketing strategy and include your keyword research, which we’ll talk about today.

User experience (your content and user journey often correlate to a higher conversion rate) *
I don’t see SEO as a single metric solution. It’s part of a bigger picture. It doesn’t matter if the best person wrote your content if the blog post isn’t built with user experience or user interface in mind.

The final part of my framework includes everything that happens outside your sphere of influence (or home, to use that metaphor again). Here we’re talking about areas like:

Social assistance
PUBLIC RELATIONS
Creating a Connection
Social shares
Once again, this area deserves its own blog post, but now you get my point. And you might be thinking, Micky, isn't that a little too simple? However, I believe you shouldn't start with advanced strategies because they can be too difficult to implement and then you may never get started because they're too overwhelming.

I prefer to focus on the basics: Like Kobe Bryant – he points out that his results come from doing the basics a million times over, and doing it much more than anyone else would.

So let's continue with the basics.

Today I will cover how to find keywords, how to optimize CTR, and how to combine this with AccuRanker.

Google Keyword Planner
I still believe that Google Keyword Planner (GKP) is a good source for finding solid information, but I think you need to look beyond GKP.

The problem is that the keywords Google suggests are based on search terms related to the word you entered, but the user may think differently about the topic in question.

If you and I were to have a conversation and say random words to each other, we might think different things depending on the first word.

If I say Real Madrid, you might think of Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Zidane and Galacticos. It even depends on when you were born. People tend to have their own reference points and GKP does not take this fact into account.

If I search for Real Madrid on GKP, I get these terms:

None of these terms come to mind when I think of Real Madrid, and most software tools work this way because they group objects into volume words rather than human-related ones - I recommend using GKP to target the "highest bids" keyword.

*I'm not saying you shouldn't use GKP to get those high volume search terms, but there are better ways to optimize if you're trying to increase sales.

Look for the highest bid for the page as this highlights the commercial intent. If enough companies are bidding on a keyword, this usually indicates that those keywords are converting.

You can sort by both terms (low range and high range).

I recommend using filters. For example, you can sort by volume (monthly searches) and also look for high commercial intent from a bidding perspective.

As you can see in the Real Madrid example, some high volume keywords show up again, but we also get some new, more commercial keywords: I could rank these even higher, of course, but you get what I mean.

Google Analytics + Google Search Console
I still see a lot of analytics accounts that don’t have a connection between Google Analytics and Google Search Console, but this is a very simple step to further align your data.

Optimize your CTRs from Search Console
I believe that working with the CTR coming from Google to your site is underestimated. Luckily, Search Console gives us all the information we need.

What I do from Search Console is extract the top 100 keywords and open them in a Google Sheet. Then I mark that page as "month name" - after that, I change the title tag and meta description of 10 of them*, then I go back and mark those 10 in yellow in the excel document. I set a calendar note to check those pages in the next 2-3 months (depending on the number of impressions to get enough data to validate the test).

Then I create a search formula to see if the number improves. Of course, keep in mind that search volume can go up and down depending on seasons etc.

This strategy helps me; not only does it help me rank better (due to higher user intent), but it also helps me convert more in existing locations.

*Of course you can make further edits, this is just to make the explanation easier.

When I started in SEO 10 years ago, I was lucky enough to experience all the keywords in Google Analytics. Then came the famous unsecured keywords.

While you can still get some ideas by combining tools like Search Console, SEMrush, and Searchmetrics, those were better days when all keywords were included in the overview in GA.

Those days are over.

I have tried many tools since then but then I came across Keyword Hero. It basically adds another view to your GA which allows you to see the keywords your domain is ranking for SEO wise.

I don’t get any affiliate commission: But the system works. I’ve tested it on a few platforms and it works perfectly. You can even combine this with your landing pages and revenue and then do some optimization. Once again, you can use the trick where you export your landing pages, optimize them and analyze the results after a few months.

Forums
One thing I learned from listening to Neil Patel and Brian Dean's podcasts is to use forums more than I ever have before. People's questions often reveal new trends. I frequent places like Quora, Reddit, and other large community sites.

Let's start with Google.

I google and search for “online marketing + forums” – I want to learn about the latest questions in my industry to get ideas for new blog posts that I’m currently working on.

This led me to the WarriorForum website

As you can see, I have some ideas about what people are talking about in the online industry right now.

I read all the famous blogs like Jon Loomer, Search Engine Land, etc. However, these blogs do not include questions from “regular people” so you do not get their honest questions. This may not be critical in the online marketing world, but in the high-volume e-commerce industries, finding new trends can generate millions in revenue.
